Beavers

The animals. Recently, I took a walk through Lundy Canyon (near Mono Lake, on the Eastern side of the Sierra Mountains). We saw this beaver dam in the lake,
and then we saw this,
and this.
And then we started seeing chewed off tree stumps everywhere.

I don't know about you, but for me, beavers had only really existed in cartoons and Narnia. So I had a back-to-childhood experience (meaning I got ridiculously excited) seeing real life evidence of real life beavers doing their real-life thing.

Yeah, The Beavs are pretty amazing, and fun to watch.

Here in Massachusetts they're protected, but they cause LOTS of problems for people whose properties they live on: flooding, wells polluted with giardia lamblia, which is endemic among them, treed areas destroyed...

But they're still fun to watch!

...from a distance, I hope. I've heard they are NOT cuddly.

Also, I was looking around for the Lorax, but he was nowhere to be seen or heard. Must have been lifted away.

No, they're definitely not cuddly. Think of them as dog-sized rats with axes for teeth. Cute though.

And sorry about the Lorax; maybe next time ;)
